But our adventure doesn't end there -we'll also dive into some unusual words from our 900 page dictionary circa 1936. So, why is it that the word caterpillar has such a lengthy definition? After our playful discussion, we’ll head into our usual interlude of tunes from the archive, with tracks by Blacktop, Kokoroko, Ben Webster, Mammal Hands, and excerpts from Six Songs for Invisible Gardens.

NEW EPISODE- Full Moon Fever

This morning I woke to a lizard above my head (on the pillow), it was watching me as I rolled over and gazed into its eyes. It crawled up my arm and into my hair. “Damn good address for a rat...” the milk passed through the homogenizer. As a boy I memorized these mornings well, the hum as my vision polestarred. Down below she mowed the lawn, my umbilicus queen in her pollen suit…

ALL HAIL P. BARBATUS- A Medicinal Glimpse

It may not look like much to the passerby, but the Plectranthus barbatus has quite an alluring list of facts beneath its fuzzy-leafed surface.

With over 10 different ethnobotanical properties, p. barbatus is a unique plant in the Lamiaceae family  -but not at all a stranger to the common-day botanist. Herbal extracts can be used as an antioxidant (keep in mind…we’re working on a tincture down in our laboratory).

The renowned benefits of this specimen can be used for stomach disorders, nervous system conditions, respiratory disorders, and helps aid in circulation. This succulent creature is often referred to as the Patta ajavayin, or the Karpuravalli. The following are also well researched ethnobotanical properties: anti-tumorigenic, antifungal, and anti-viral.

All hail the humble, yet mighty, p. barbatus!!

Caressed by the fragrant greenery by which they were once shrouded: exposed neuroses of the jacaranda trees aligned their blooming phases. A tongue beyond the tide! I can haves Starship Troopers on repeat, between midnight and Cloe -she was feathering the door handle in the magnificent chamber.

On the floor of the train: a piece of fuzz, a blue rose, a sandal, a quarter. Fern, Asplenium (cordially hid our gaze). As tempting as his sudor expressed; Aurora Ljubav was speechless. As was I. Despite all affirmative balmy-ness, Ms Brodersonia Umredi had an extended adoration for past participles, mosses, and panorpidae.

NEW EPISODE- Starwood Thrush-Hunt

How does a plate of broccoli relate to Claude Levi-Strauss' Introduction to a Science of Mythology? Claude's early works were rarely celebrated, as his experiments didn't always appeal to his fellow anthropologists. But we're dancing on his grave anyhow, as his alien love-call tastes like honey.

Aside from these ghastly scrumptious happenings, we’ll be discussing the essentials of costume improvisations…and why the first rainfall ov the season encourages you to vote! If you're feeling down in the dumps, you're in luck  -as Deng Ming-Dao's work is also a featured literary treat. It's sure getting spooky out there…”Open sesame," begged thee Iguana. "Only by the hair of my chinny-chin-chin" whispered Clementine.

Our playlist includes quite a few tracks by A Car That Swims; a band who's new to our archive. Appearances are also made by VHS Ghost, Connie Francis, Quetzalcoatl(us)…the list is endless.

NEW EPISODE- Lyall's Daramulum Molecules & Other Stories

STREAM OR DOWNLOAD

Welcome to Season Six of our program  -we'll depart with an interlude into some of our favorite go-to films for when we're down-in-the-dumps analyzing behavioral traits of the wind via Lyall Watson.

This is true, for our first episode of the season we'll be reading a few excerpts from Watson's nonfiction masterpiece, "Heaven's Breath: A Natural History of the Wind", which we in fact featured exactly a year ago. Watson was not only a zoologist & botanist, he also was instrumental in creating The Indian Ocean Whale Sanctuary. Of course, to honor Samhain we decided to recite a few spells from Llewellyn's infamous Spell-A-Day Almanac of long lost lore & self-sustainable meditations.

Stay till the very end of our episode for tunes from Colin Blunstone, Peter Grudzien, Ofege, Lizzy Mercier Descloux, Strawberry Switchblade, Yukiji Asaoka, and a dozen others from our ever expanding archive.

RECOMMENDED READING- A Manual of the Vascular Plants

Salutations fellow Phytophiles,

Whether you’re just a brown-thumbed beginner, or a flourishing master in the garden, we always like to recommend the following guide…as not only a vital compendium for all your needs amidst butterfly sonnets, but a rather attractive illustrated book for your shelves.

We present to you John Hunter Thomas’ Flora of the Santa Cruz Mountains: A Manual of the Vascular Plants. This glorious hardcover features economically essential plants for your greenhouse  -Hunter’s 434 page guide is bloated with introductory divisions of Pterophyta + Lepidophyta (to mention just a few). But what follows are chapters which fluctuate between stratigraphic columns of rocks, interdigitation of plant communities, and streambank vegetation. Not for sale, but a featured book from our archive.  Stanford University Press, circa 1961.

An excerpt: Synonyms are included only for convenience in referring to the same taxon in other regional and sectional floras. The type localities of many proposed taxa occur within the Santa Cruz Mountains. I have made no attempt to list or include these taxa unless they are still considered to be valid. A number of species such as the Berberis darwinii and Viburnum tinus have been observed growing spontaneously. One can predict that in the next few years quite a large number of additional plants will be found as occasional escapes from cultivation, or as accidental or deliberate introductions.

NEW EPISODE- Morning On Panther Mountain

Sweetly the salamander woke to an octopus at its doorstep, counting the pennies on her toes. Awaiting the sound of the train to whisk away the pain. The panther provided for its prey a convincing argument, but then the salamander kissed him, and he ran away.

Ahoy fellow Venusians, thee end ov the year is just around the corner! We appreciate you sticking around, although we hope you won't be disappointed...we're not exactly getting spooky just yet. With time, my little ghoulz und goylz, we promise - said the panther in heat, all the while muttering to a plate of cucumbers.

For this morning's program we feature tracks by Strange Boutique, Mark Fry, White Noise, The Birthday Party, Loose Joints, O. Nytrova, The Red Crayola, and a few other spinning plates from our endless archive.

NEW EPISODE- Hunting Wasps & Palaearctic Larvae

Have you noticed the influx of post-eclipse creatures...such as the velvety blue-winged Scolia dubia (order Hymenoptera), or the distinctive song of the Palaearctic bush cricket? Lest we forget just how the Cerceris sextoides happen to resume a perch, and...where is it that the carnivorous larvae's blackish goo resumes its salvation?

We'll answer all these questions and more with a focus on our most recent antiquarian find (circa 1921); J.H. Fabre's MORE HUNTING WASPS  -a plentiful 14 chapter guide containing essays in the Souvenirs entomologigues series.
